What should we do when ChatGPT credits our product or image to another brand?
OpenAI reporting guidance checked on 17 September 2026. This page covers one problem: ChatGPT assigns a product or image to the wrong brand. Use the SPF guide for market-specific sunscreen claims.
What evidence should we save before requesting a correction?
Keep one record per incident and preserve the original answer before editing a source page. Include:
- The error: exact question, complete answer, screenshot, conversation URL, date and displayed model.
- The attribution: the product or image, the brand ChatGPT named, the correct brand and any cited URL.
- The original record: official product page or original image file, creator, first publication date and the page establishing the correct owner.
- The follow-up: source edit, report receipt and later answers to the same question. A submitted report is not evidence that the error was corrected.
Do not publish private contracts as evidence. If image ownership is disputed, confirm who is authorized to act before making a rights claim.
Should we correct the website or report the AI answer?
Check both. If a cited page names the wrong brand, send that publisher the original record and requested replacement. If the cited page is accurate but ChatGPT changes the attribution, report the answer with the supporting URL. If ChatGPT shows no source, record that fact rather than inventing one.
Use thumbs-down feedback for an ordinary factual error. For a policy or legal concern, follow OpenAI’s reporting guide, which links separate copyright and trademark forms. These routes do not promise removal or a response time.
For a simple factual error, describe the wrong attribution and expected correction. Do not select an infringement category solely because a brand name is wrong.
What does SearchD hand back?
SearchD can organize the incident record, draft the factual source correction, prepare the evidence for a ChatGPT report and save later answers to the same question. A source edit, a submitted report and a corrected answer remain three separate events.
Whether an image use infringes rights, who may make a claim and what remedy to pursue require the rights holder’s review. SearchD does not provide litigation representation or guarantee that ChatGPT will stop repeating an error.
