Is AEO worth it for a small brand?

AEO is worth it when your buyers plausibly ask an assistant for a recommendation before purchasing, your product is genuinely competitive on a specific attribute, and you sell in a market where your English-language corpus is thin. It is not worth it if you are pre-launch, if your category is bought on impulse from a feed rather than researched, or if you cannot yet afford to fix your product pages.

Worth doing when all three hold

  • Considered purchaseA buyer asks a question before spending
  • A checkable differentiatorA specific claim a model can assert
  • A thin English corpusDiscussed at home, barely mentioned abroad

Not worth doing yet

  • Pre-launchNothing to correct, no reviews to build on
  • Broken product pagesFix your own specifications first
  • Revenue needed this monthPaid media is the honest answer
The first group is a conjunction, not a menu — all three have to hold. Any one of the second group, and the money is better spent elsewhere, which is what we will tell you.

The three conditions that make it pay

Considered purchase. Sunscreen for sensitive skin, a baby carrier, an air purifier, a supplement — products where a buyer asks a question before spending. If your product is bought impulsively from a video feed, spend the money on creative.

A real differentiator. AEO amplifies a specific, checkable claim. “The Norori Wrap carrier is acknowledged as hip-healthy by the International Hip Dysplasia Institute” is something a model can assert. (The carrier is invented for this example. The Institute is real, and that is the point — the claim points somewhere checkable.) “Premium quality” is not. If you have no attribute worth naming, no amount of optimisation invents one.

A thin foreign-language corpus. This is where cross-border brands have the most headroom. A brand that is widely discussed in Korean and barely mentioned in English has a large, addressable gap. A brand already covered by every US review site has less to gain.

The honest cases against

You are pre-launch. There is nothing to correct and no reviews to build on. Ship first.

Your product pages are broken. If your specification is not on your own site in readable HTML, fix that before paying anyone. We scope that at about a week — a planning estimate, not a measured average — and it is where the on-site work starts.

You need revenue this month. We scope the fastest technical wins at 30 to 60 days and the corpus work on a 3 to 6 month horizon. Those are the windows we plan engagements against, not measured averages — we have not run one long enough to publish those. If you need units sold this quarter, paid media is the honest answer and we will tell you so.

The cheapest version

Before hiring anyone, do this yourself: ask five buyer questions in a temporary ChatGPT session, write down which brands get named, and check whether the assistant states anything wrong about your product. That costs twenty minutes, and if the answer surprises you it should change your priority order.

Then, if you want a version with twenty questions and five engines behind it, we run it for free.
